CONCACAF World Cup QualifiersWorld Cup betting odds: North American soccer is near and dear to the hearts of so many, but if we're being realistic about the whole thing, there aren't a heck of a lot of teams in CONCACAF that have a legitimate chance of challenging in the World Cup. Of the 35 nations in CONCACAF, three have guaranteed spots in the World Cup, while a fourth could work its way in by winning an intercontinental playoff against a team from Asia.

Honduras vs. United States

Panama vs. Trinidad & Tobago

Costa Rica vs. Mexico

The Hex is really starting to fall into place at this point, and the teams that should be qualifying for the World Cup are very likely now set to do just that. The United States has righted the ship after losing its first two fixtures, taking two wins and two draws from its last two affairs to get back into qualifying range. Though Panama, Honduras and Trinidad & Tobago are all still far from out of this whole thing, it Mexico and Costa Rica are close to qualifying, and the Yanks figure they'll get there eventually.

Los Ticos have a tough route ahead these next couple matches. They're home to Mexico and away to the United States, and if those matches are lost, the door could swing open just a bit. That said, Panama and Honduras both have to deal with the United States or Mexico in this next set of qualifiers, and the chances of getting anything from those affairs are slim.

T&T's last hope comes in this next segment of qualifying. The team will get Honduras at home and Panama away, and you'd like to think that at least four, if not all six points will be required to keep this team's World Cup dreams alive.

First Round CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying (Advancing Teams in Bold)

The 35 teams in CONCACAF were split into four sections at the start of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. Teams ranked No. 22 to No. 35 in the FIFA World Rankings were pitted against each other in the first round in a home-and-home series where the winner advanced to Round 2, while the loser had their World Cup hopes dashed early in March 2015. All seven of the "top seeds" advanced out of Round 1.

Team 1 Team 2 1st Leg 2nd Leg
Bahamas Bermuda 0-5 0-3
British Virgin Islands Dominica 2-3 0-0

Second Round CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying (Advancing Teams in Bold)

The seven teams from the first round of qualifying joined the teams ranked No. 9 to 21 in CONCACAF for a home-and-home series in June 2015. In tremendous upsets, Nicaragua and Curacao both advanced to Round 3 after pulling relatively big upsets in their second round matchups.

Third Round CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying (Advancing Teams in Bold)

What makes the third round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying so odd is that there were only two new entries into the field, Jamaica and Haiti. The difference between being ranked in the Top 6 and No. 9 was a whole two rounds of knockout qualifying. Once again, the teams were matched up in a home-and-home series, this time in August and September 2015. All but one of the higher ranked teams advanced to Round 4. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines upset Aruba to advance to the fourth round.

Team 1 Team 2 1st Leg 2nd leg
Curacao El Salvador 0-1 0-1
Canada Belize 3-0 1-1
Grenada Haiti 1-3 0-3
Jamaica Nicaragua 2-3 2-0

Antigua and Barbuda Guatemala 1-0 0-2

Fourth Round CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying (Advancing Teams in Bold)

Finally, the top teams in CONCACAF joined the qualifying fray in November 2015, as two of the top six teams were placed into groups with two of the six qualifiers from Round 3. The groups of four played home-and-home matches against each other with the top two qualifiers moving on to the final round of World Cup qualifying in CONCACAF. Each of the Top 6 ranked teams moved on to the last stage. These matches ran from November 2015 through September 2016.

Fifth Round CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying (Advancing Teams in Bold)

Finally, the Hex. It's one of the most grueling qualifying rounds in all of World Cup qualifying, as all of the teams who have gotten to this point have already played six matches and have to play 10 home, five home and five away in some generally hostile environments. Three of the top six teams advance automatically from the World Cup when this round robin is said and done with, while the fourth place team will move on to the intercontinental playoff against a team from Asia for a home-and-home series in November that will help determine one of the last two bids to Russia in 2018.
