2017-Conferederations-Cup-Rusia-Betting-OddsConfederations Cup Betting Lines: Back in 1992, Saudi Arabia hosted what was then known as the King Fahd Cup. The initial event housed just four teams. Since that point, the tournament has been renamed the Confederations Cup, has become a sanctioned FIFA event, has doubled in size, and is now considered to be the main prep for the World Cup.

The 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia will begin on Saturday, June 17 and run through the final on Sunday, July 2. All of the action can be seen on FOX, FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports 2.

Germany -140

Chile +110

At the outset of the Confederations Cup, many wondered if the second match in Group B was going to end up being a preview of the championship match. Thus, it probably shouldn't be all that surprising that this is what we're ultimately left with.

This B-squad for Germany has proven to look like one of the best teams in the world. Sure, the Confederations Cup doesn't quite have the same elite sides as the squads who will show up in the World Cup next year, but this also won't be the Germany team that comes to Russia. This was always a play about the future, and Joachim Low has already been rewarded handsomely for his confidence in his reserves.

Chile though, will provide a much different challenge. Matches against Mexico and Cameroon in particular have opened up for Germany. The team was able to get early goals on the board in both matches and have largely been able to coast from there. This will likely end up being a much grittier finale, especially against a team that has now allowed just one goal in its last seven knockout matches in major international competitions.

Confederations Cup Format

Qualifying for the Confederations Cup is somewhat of a chore. Each confederation is guaranteed a spot in the Confederations Cup.

CONCACAF decides its winner with the winners of the Gold Cup. If the biannual winners of the two prior Gold Cups are different teams, those teams meet in a one-match playoff to get into the Confederations Cup. In 2016, Mexico beat the United States in Pasadena for the right to play here in Russia.

CONMEBOL sends the Copa America winner from two years prior. Since Copa America Centenario was played in 2016 and featured a slew of North American sides, South America recognized its 2015 winner, Chile to send to the Confederations Cup.

The Asian Cup winner two years prior to the Confederations Cup earns the right to play in this tournament out of AFC, while Oceania picks its participant based on the winner of the OFC Nations Cup. Africa's representative is the team that wins the Africa Cup of Nations early in the year. The winner of the Euros a year before the Confederations Cup also earns a spot.

The other two slots in the field are reserved for the host nation and the prior World Cup winners.

List of Confederations Cup Winners

Year Winner Runner-Up Host Nation
2017 TBD TBD Russia
2013 Brazil Spain Brazil
2009 Brazil United States South Africa
2005 Brazil Argentina Germany
2003 France Cameroon France
2001 France Japan South Korea & Japan
1999 Mexico Brazil Mexico
1997 Brazil Australia Saudi Arabia
1995 Denmark Argentina Saudi Arabia
1992 Argentina Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia

The Confederations Cup has only been around for 25 years, so it shouldn't be all that surprising that the dominant team of the bunch has been Brazil. The Brazilians have played in five of the nine prior Confederations Cup Finals, and they've won four of the five. The 2017 edition of the Confederations Cup marks the first time since 1995 that Brazil hasn't qualified to play.

Aside from that, the results have been a bit all over the place. We've seen other powers like France capture two straight Confederations Cups in 2001 and 2003, but Japan, Cameroon, Australia, Denmark and Saudi Arabia have all been finalists in the history of the tournament as well.

The host nation has played in the final of the Confederations Cup five times with Brazil, France and Mexico having won it on their home turf.

Every confederation has been represented in the Confederations Cup Final at least once, though only CONMEBOL, UEFA and CONCACAF have actually won the event. Two teams from the same confederation have only met in the Confederations Cup Final one time, that being when Brazil beat Argentina in the 2005 final in Germany.
