Younger fans of English football might be surprised to learn that Burnley has had a fair amount of historic success despite being a relative newcomer to the Premier League. The Clarets have two league championships to their name, finishing atop the top tier of English football in 1920-21 and 1959-60. They were largely a top tier club until the mid-1970s before freefalling all the way into the fourth division of English football just a decade later.
Burnley yo-yoed between the first and second division of English football for the next two decades before making it to the Premier League in 2009-10. It took a couple times for the promotion to stick, but now the Clarets are entering their third straight year of Premier League play.
This club has achieved some impressive results away from league play too. Burnley has won two Community Shields, one FA Cup, and made it to the Quarterfinals of the predecessor the Champions League in 1961.

The 2017-18 campaign was a massive success for Burnley. The Clarets were able to finish in seventh place in the Premier League because of a stingy defense that allowed just over a goal per game. That finish allowed Burnley to qualify for the Europa League, and the club will be making its first appearance in European play in over a half-century.
Burnley has yet to make a big splash this offseason, but they may decide to roll the dice a bit later this month. The Clarets have a phenomenal defender in James Tarkowski, yet they don’t have much in the way of offense. Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes combined for 19 goals, but no other player found the back of the net more than four times.
The Clarets will start their Europa League campaign later this month. The schedule makers did them a favor with their slate through the first two months of the season, and they won’t have to face many of the traditional powers while they are slugging their way though qualifying. In their first eight matches, Burnley is only facing one team that is projected to finish in the top eight of the Premier League.
