The Magpies only recently made it back into the Premier League, but this club is no stranger to top flight football. Newcastle United has been a part of the Premier League for all but three years of the league’s existence, and they have been relatively synonymous with the first tier of English football for most of their history.
Although newer fans may not remember a time when Newcastle United were great, this has been one of the more successful clubs in England over the course of its history. Newcastle United’s return to the top flight last season was an unequivocal success. The Magpies were fantastic at home, knocking off Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United among others at St. James’ Park. The club posted an impressive 8-4-7 home record and didn’t need to pick up many points on the road to ensure their survival as a result.
Defense was key to the club’s finish in the top half of the table, with Newcastle United allowing 47 goals on the year. The Magpies gave up the seventh-fewest goals in the league, and they should continue to be solid along the back this season.
For Rafael Benitez’s club to improve its position in the table this year, the club must have more scoring threats. Dwight Gayle has been hit or miss, but there is some hope that either Ayoze Perez or Aleksandar Mitrovic can take a step forward this year. That would be huge for the Magpies.
