Atalanta have spent most of their history in the top flight of Italian soccer. Although this club was originally in Serie B when the current national system was established, Atalanta did not need much time to make it to Serie A. They have been a constant presence in Serie A in the post-war years, but there hasn’t been a ton of success. Their best-ever finish didn’t come until the 2016-17 campaign, when they finished in fourth place.

That doesn’t mean this club’s mantle is barren though. Atalanta won the Coppa Italia in 1963, and they have qualified for European play a handful of times. They made it to the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1988, and they have made a couple decent runs in the Europa League.

This is a high-water mark for Atalanta. Generally, the club has been a mid- to low-table team in Italian soccer, but spirits are high among the Nerazzurri after solid finishes in each of the last two seasons. They finished higher in the table than Lazio and both Milan teams in 2016-17, qualifying for the Europa League in the process, and they grabbed seventh place last year.

Atalanta have not been shy about their ambitions, and they spent a good deal of coin this offseason. They brought in a number of top players from other clubs, grabbing Duvan Zapata from Sampdoria, Davide Bettella and Marco Carraro from Inter Milan, Marco Tumminello from Roma, and Bryan Cristante from Benfica.

The goal is to make it into the top four and qualify for the Champions League for the first time ever, but Atalanta would not be disappointed with their third straight appearance in the Europa League either.
