Parma have played in either the second- or third-tier of Italian football for most of their history. It wasn’t until the early 1990s that the club finally qualified for Serie A for the first time. They made an immediate impact thanks to massive investment from then-owner Parmalat.

Thanks to owners that were flush with cash, Parma experienced unprecedented success. They finished as one of the top six teams in Serie A for 11 straight years, and won three Coppa Italiana titles and two Europa League championships during that span as well. It seemed like Parma would be part of the new hierarchy of Italian soccer and an eventual domestic title was a formality, but then everything came crashing down.

It turned out that Parmalat had been hiding losses for years, and the company ended up filing the largest bankruptcy in European history in the mid-2000s. That led to Parma being put into administration, and eventually they were forced to file bankruptcy and relegated to Serie D. They have been on a historic rise since then though, and they are once again a part of Serie A.
