A.S. Roma UEFA Champions League Odds
For most of their history, AS Roma have been one of the top teams in Italy’s Serie A. Roma have been able to claim three league championships, nine Italian Cups, and two Italian Supercups over the course of their history and they also won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup back in 1961. The club is still in search of its first-ever UEFA recognized European title, though they have come close over the years.
Roma nearly pulled off the unthinkable in their first foray into the Champions League. The club had not qualified for the competition prior to the 1983-84 campaign, but they were quick to make their mark on the competition. They were able to dispatch Gothenburg and CSKA Sofia in the first two knockout rounds and then enthralled their fans by taking out Dynamo Berlin in the Quarterfinals and overcoming a 2-0 loss in the first tie to send Dundee United packing as well. That set up a meeting with Liverpool in the Champions League Final, and the two clubs were deadlocked at the end of full time. Unfortunately, Roma ended up losing in penalties in front of their home crowd at Stadio Olimpico.
They came ever so close to grabbing a Europa League title too. During the 1990-91 competition, they raised eyebrows by knocking out regional powers like Benfica, Valencia, and Anderlecht on their way to the final four. Once there, Roma was able to defeat Brondby in the semifinals, setting up an all-Italian final with Inter Milan. Once again, they came up just short, losing 2-1 to their rivals on aggregate.

Roma was able to play Cinderella once again last season. Most analysts didn’t give Roma much of a chance to get out of their group. They were drawn into a group with Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, and those two clubs were the favorites to make it to the knockout rounds.
Yet Roma was able to win the group despite only winning one of their four matches against those two clubs. Atletico had not been able to defeat lowly Qarabag in either one of their ties, setting the stage for Roma to grab the top spot in the group after beating Chelsea at home and drawing with them in Stamford Bridge.
The dream continued in the Round of 16 when they were able to continue their journey after beating Shakhtar Donetsk on away goals. No one gave them any sort of chance against Barcelona in the Quarterfinals though, especially after Barca was able to pick up a 4-1 win in the first leg of the tie at Camp Nou. Roma was able to rally for an incredible 3-0 win at home though, sending heavily favored Barcelona crashing out of the competition. Roma nearly repeated the feat in the semifinals against Liverpool, but they fell just short as Liverpool advanced 7-6 in the highest scoring aggregate semifinal in Champions League history.
Perhaps no Champions League team has seen as much change as Roma has this offseason. Alisson was signed away by Liverpool for a record sum for a goalkeeper, and Radja Nainggolan was pulled away by Inter Milan. Numerous other players were sold off or recalled from loan spells, but Roma wasn’t content to just pocket their profits after tasting Champions League success.
Instead, Roma went out and made some shrewd signings. The club nabbed midfielder Javier Pastore away from Paris Saint Germain, completed the transfer of Gregoire Defrel, and snagged World Cup star Robin Olsen away from Copenhagen. There are a lot of new faces, but Roma is ready to compete once more.
