FC Schalke 04 UEFA Champions League Odds
Although they haven’t had a ton of success in recent years, FC Schalke 04 is one of the most popular teams in Germany. They have the second-biggest supporter club in the country, and they field a number of teams in a host of different sports. The club fields teams in basketball, track and field, handball, and even eSports.
FC Schalke 04 have won seven league titles, five German Cups, and one German Supercup. They were the first German team to win a double too, but the team has struggled to match the success they found in the early part of the 20th Century. Schalke has not won the Bundesliga since 1958, although they have finished runner-up five times over the last two decades.
The club has fared much better in the league cup in recent years. Schalke claimed the German Cup in 2001, 2002, and 2011, and that has helped satiate their fans while they continue to wait for another league championship.
In European action, Schalke has been able to claim three trophies. The most notable was in 1997 when they grabbed the Europa League title. Schalke defeated Trabzonspor, Club Brugge, Valencia, and Tenerife to set up a meeting with Inter Milan in the final. There, they went to a penalty shootout which they won 4-1.
Schalke was able to claim consecutive Intertoto Cups in 2003 and 2004, but the next biggest success came in the Champions League in 2011. In that competition, Schalke bested a group that included Lyon and Benfica to set them up nicely going into the knockout rounds. They were able to beat Valencia in the Round of 16 and hammered Inter Milan in the quarterfinals before falling to Manchester United in the semifinals.

FC Schalke 04 first made it to the Champions League the year after they won their last Bundesliga title. However, they were unable to return to the premier competition in club football until the 21st Century. The club mostly played in the Europa League in the 2000s, but the club has experienced a resurgence this decade. This will be Schalke’s fifth trip to the Champions League in the 2010s, and they have made it to the knockout rounds in each of their previous four trips.
Last season, Schalke was able to finish in second place in the Bundesliga. The club had one of the top defenses in the league, allowing just 37 goals in 34 matches. That was the third-lowest total of any team in the league. Goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann tied with three others for the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets, and he has been solid since replacing Manuel Neuer at the start of the decade.
Guido Burgstaller was Schalke’s leading goal scorer last season. He tallied 11 goals in his first season after coming over from FC Nurnberg, and he could be even better this season.
Schalke made a number of moves this summer in order to strengthen their chances in the Champions League. The club snared midfielder Suat Serdar from Mainz and took on Omar Mascarell from Real Madrid. They also added center back Salif Sane and winger Steven Skrzybski to the equation as well. Schalke has a good chance of getting to the knockout round once more.
