Athletic Bilbao Spanish La Liga Odds
No club is more beloved than Athletic Bilbao in Basque Country. Athletic Bilbao has been one of the most successful clubs in Spanish football, and they have done it with homegrown talent. This team has been able to identify and develop players at a young age better than almost any club in the world, which is a necessity given the team’s policy of only using players that have Basque heritage. That has hamstrung them at times, but it has also made them extremely popular with local supporters.
It’s hard to argue too much with the policy given its results. Athletic Bilbao is one of three clubs to have never been relegated from La Liga, with the other two being giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. They have also won eight La Liga titles and were the best team in Spain throughout the 1930s. Their last league championship came in 1984, but they have continued to finish in the top half of the table and have qualified for European play numerous times over the last decade.
Only won team has won more Copa del Rey titles than Athletic Bilbao. The club has won that competition 23 times, but it’s last win came in 1984 as well. They have finished runners-up three times in the last decade though, so it’s not like they haven’t been close.

After qualifying for European play for four straight seasons, Athletic Bilbao took a major step back last year. Ernesto Valverde retired at the end of the 2016-17 season and left Jose Angel Ziganda in charge of the team. The club was unable to find its form under Ziganda though, and he was dismissed following their worst performance in over a decade. Former Sevilla manager Eduardo Berizzo will be the team’s manager for this campaign.
Because of the club’s policy of only playing Basque players, their options in the transfer window are limited. However, they did make something of a splash by dishing out a large sum of money to acquire left back Yuri Berchiche from Paris Saint Germain.
This team should be dangerous on set pieces due to the ability of Aritz Aduriz and Raul Garcia to punish opponents with their heads. However, both players are getting a bit long in the tooth and may not have the same success they have had in previous years.
