2019 Women’s World Cup Semifinals Update

The presumed ‘final’ between the United States and France was everything we thought it would be. The US and France were the two favorites to win the World Cup before the start of the tournament, but as fate would have it they were drawn together in the quarterfinals. Megan Rapinoe proved to be the difference maker for the USWNT in a 2-1 win, scoring both of the United States’ goals and striking a pose that has turned her into a social media sensation. However, the work is not done for the United States yet, and they will face another tough opponent in the semifinals.

England had no trouble in a 3-0 win over Norway. It was the second straight dominating performance from the Three Lionesses, and this team has proven it can pick apart seemingly stout back lines. Jill Scott, Ellen White, Lucy Bronze, and Nikita Parris form a devastating foursome, and they won’t be an easy opponent to get past. Their back line has yet to be really tested though, so don’t be surprised if there are plenty of goals when England and the United States meet on Tuesday.

The other semifinal does not have the same fanfare but involves two teams that have looked sharp throughout the World Cup. The Netherlands won the 2017 Euros, and they have played very aesthetically pleasing football to this point. Their open, attacking style has drawn comparisons to Dutch football during the 1970s and 1980s, and they are favored to beat their semifinal opponents.

Sweden is the dark horse team of the tournament. Many predicted Sweden to lose to Canada or Germany, but instead the Swedes held firm in the back and generated enough offense to secure narrow victories. Their match against the Netherlands will be a contrast of styles.

Given their relative dominance, it’s not surprising that the United States are the favorites to win the Women’s World Cup. They have won three of the seven Women’s World Cups contested thus far, and they have always been competitive. The Stars and Stripes have plenty of old veterans like Ali Krieger, Becky Sauerbrunn, Megan Rapinoe, Carly Lloyd, and Alex Morgan, and there are some young stars like Julie Ertz and Lindsey Horan ready to take the mantle.

France is the second-favorite largely because they are the tournament hosts. The French team is ranked No. 3 in the world according to UEFA, but they have yet to win a major tournament. They beat the US team 3-1 in a tune-up in January, yet they lost to Germany 1-0 in February.

Speaking of Germany, the German women are the third-favorite. They won the gold medal at the 2016 Olympics, and they are the No. 2 ranked team in the world headed into the World Cup.

2019 Women’s World Cup Schedule

The 2019 Women’s World Cup will take place from June 7, 2019, through July 7, 2019, in France. The tournament features 24 teams including defending Women’s World Cup champion USA. A total of 52 matches will be played at the 2019 Women’s World Cup in nine cities. The 2018 World Cup Final will take place on July 7 at Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon, France.

List of Women’s World Cup Winners

YEAR WINNER RUNNER UP SCORE
2015 United States Japan 5-2
2011 Japan United States 3-1 (pen)
2007 Germany Brazil 2-0
2003 Germany Sweden 2-1 (a.e.t)
1999 United States China PR 5-4 (pen)
1995 Norway Germany 2-0
1991 United States Norway 2-1

The United States has been the juggernaut of women’s soccer since the first World Cup in 1991. The Stars and Stripes have won more World Cups than any other country, and they are the only team to have made it to the semifinals in all seven previous tournaments. Team USA is the only squad to have won a World Cup on their home turf, with Brandi Chastain firing home the winning penalty over China at the Rose Bowl in 1999.

Germany has had the second-most success at the Women’s World Cup. The German women are the only back-to-back winners in the history of the tournament, claiming the title in 2003 and 2007. They made it to the semifinals back in 2015 before losing to the US.

The French have yet to make it to a Women’s World Cup final. France is a recent power in the game, and their club teams are the best in the world. Olympique Lyon has won five of the last eight Champions Leagues, and they have made it to the finals in seven of the last nine years.

Unfortunately, the best player in the game today will not be taking part in the Women’s World Cup. Ada Hegerberg has decided that she will not play for Norway at the tournament, and she has not played for the national team in nearly two years.
