NFL Playoffs Divisional Round Betting

We’ll see how meaningful the first round bye is when the top teams from each conference are in action this week with the NFC’s Detroit Lions and AFC’s Kansas City Chiefs taking the field in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs starting on Saturday. Five of the eight teams reaching the second round are in a familiar spot having been here just 12 months ago. Two of those clubs hook up in the first game of the weekend on Saturday when the Chiefs begin their quest for a record third straight Super Bowl title hosting the Houston Texans. They’ve won seven straight playoff games since losing to Cincinnati in the AFC Championship in the 2022 season.

Philadelphia Eagles 28-22 vs. Los Angeles Rams

For the second straight year the Texans won a Wild Card game upsetting the Chargers, 32-12, last week. Houston intercepted four passes and used a strong offensive performance against one of the NFL top defenses to advance. C.J. Stroud threw for 282 yards and a TD and Joe Mixon rushed for 106 yards and a score. Houston has never advanced past the Divisional Round losing all five appearances, including a 51-31 setback in KC during the 2019 season. The teams met in Week 16 with the Chiefs earning a 27-19 home victory, their fourth straight and third payout in that span.

The top team in the NFC also plays on Saturday with the Lions hosting Washington. Both top seeds are big favorites with the Chiefs laying 7.5-points and Detroit the biggest favorite on the Divisional Round betting board as 9.5-point chalk on the early line. The banged up Lions worked through numerous injuries to post the best record in franchise history to earn the No. 1 seed in the NFC for the first time and the much-needed bye that came with it. He hasn’t been mentioned in the MVP race but Jared Goff had a MVP type season throwing for 4,628 yards and 37 TDs as Detroit led the NFL averaging 33.2 points per game.

In the most recent meeting between the teams that took place during the 2022 season, Goff tossed four TD passes in the Lions 36-27 win over the Commanders. Detroit has won the last two encounters and six of the previous seven while going 5-1-1 ATS. The team formerly known as the Redskins advanced with a 23-20 win over Tampa Bay last week, their first postseason win since the 2005 season. This is the only game in the divisional round that isn’t a rematch from the regular season.

The remaining two conference championship game participants will be decided on Sunday in contests that produced a lopsided outcome during the regular season. Both NFC participants rolled to wild card wins with the Philadelphia Eagles throttling Green Bay 22-10. The Eagles had the best defense in the NFL during the regular season and they were the only team to allow an average of fewer than 300 yards per game. They held the Packers to 302 total yards in the first round. The Rams advanced by beating the 14-win Vikings, 27-9, in a game that was moved to Arizona due to the raging fires in LA. It didn’t matter as the Rams held their fourth opponent in the last five games to fewer than 10 points.

LA’s defense has improved since Week 12 when the Eagles registered a 37-20 road win. Saquon Barkley rushed for 255 yards with TD runs of 70 and 72 yards while the defense limited the Rams to 290 total yards and sacked Matthew Stafford five times. It was Philly’s second straight win in the series and eighth in the last nine meetings with seven payouts in that span.

The most anticipated game concludes the divisional round when Buffalo hosts Baltimore in a matchup of MVP favorites. The Ravens took the rubber game of their season series with Pittsburgh winning 28-14 with Lamar Jackson doing plenty of damage to temporarily squelch his postseason failures. LJ threw a pair of TD passes and rushed for 81 yards. Derrick Henry did his part with 186 yards and two scores on the ground. This is also a chance for Josh Allen and the Bills to avenge one of the worst games of the year. Allen threw for just 180 yards and the Bills were stymied in a 35-10 loss in Week 4. The Ravens are the only road favorite in the divisional round laying 1-point on the early line.

NFL Football Picks

The biggest blowout in the modern-day NFL playoffs happened in the Divisional Round of the 1999-00 NFL postseason. Jacksonville demolished Miami 62-7 at home in what ended up being the great Dan Marino’s last game. Marino could only complete 11 of 25 passes for 95 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in the 55-point loss. He was pulled due to injury, and Damon Huard couldn’t do any better by completing 5 of 16 passes for 46 yards. The Dolphins ended the day with just 131 total yards and turned the ball over seven times.

Meanwhile, Jacksonville could do no wrong in the win. Mark Brunell only threw nine passes before giving way to Jay Fielder when the game turned into a rout. The Jaguars had 520 total yards of offense and scored 62 points despite turning the ball over twice on the day.
