The Dallas Cowboys have resisted firing a head coach during the season, but they may not have a choice after another disastrous outing. The Boys lost their fourth straight game and fell to 3-6 with a 34-6 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday, making the seat even hotter for Mike McCarthy. And they may be without Dak Prescott for the remainder of the season needing better play from Cooper Rush and Trey Lance if they want to break their skid in the Week 11 Monday Night Football clash with the Houston Texans.

The Texans continue to lead the AFC South and are the only team in the division with a winning record. But they’re making things harder than they need to be. They let a lead slip away in a 26-23 loss to Detroit on Sunday night for their first two-game losing streak of the season. They’ve also dropped three of their last four games with all three setbacks decided by a total of 13 points. Dallas is catching 7.5-points on the early line making them a home underdog of at least 7-points for the second straight game.

The Cowboys didn’t do much winning with Prescott in the lineup so it’s crazy to assume they’d reverse roles without him. There was a quiet sense of optimism that Rush could do the job since he had previously winning five of six starts during his career with the club. But things didn’t go according to plan on Sunday with Rush benched in favor of Lance. That didn’t help either as the Cowboys failed to score a touchdown in the 34-6 defeat. Rush was 13 of 23 for only 45 yards and lost a pair of fumbles.

It’s hard to say if that game was the low-point for Dallas, but it can’t get much worse. The Boys managed just 146 total yards, the worst offensive showing for them at home in the history of ATT Stadium. Five turnovers, including an Ezekiel Elliott fumble that went out of the Eagles end zone, and a CeeDee Lamb dropped pass that would have been a touchdown, added to fourth home loss in as many games and didn’t silence the dissatisfaction of fans.

Dallas announced early in the week that Rush will remain the starter moving forward. And that’s not all bad since he won’t be facing Philly this week. He is 5-2 as a starter with both losses against the Eagles where he had five turnovers by himself. A big help would be running the football more effectively. Rico Dowdle leads the team with 374 yards on the ground and the Boys have the second-worst ground game in the NFL averaging just 83.7 yards.

We will see just how resilient the Texans. They appeared on their way to a huge victory last week leading the best team in the NFC 23-7 at halftime. But the Lions are the top dog for a reason scoring 19 second half points while pitching a shutout. They won the game on a 52-yard Jake Bates field goal as time expired. A series earlier Ka’imi Fairbairn missed a 58-yard field toal attempt that would’ve given Houston the lead. “We didn’t make the plays to win the game. To win games guys have to step up and make plays and that’s not happening,” coach DeMeco Ryans said.

There were a few bright moments from the Texans in the Detroit game. They had a team record five interceptions, but unfortunately they were unable to turn those into enough points to secure a victory. The offense completely shutdown in the second half with Joe Mixon rushing for 46 yards on 25 carries. He entered the game averaging more than 100 yards per game on the ground. And C.J. Stroud matched a career-worst throwing two picks thwarting promising drives.

In four home losses this season the Cowboys have allowed an average 38.3 points and 444.5 yards giving the Texans hope the offense can break out.

Week 1 of the 2024 Monday Night Football season begins with a mega market matchup of the New York Jets at the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers are coming off their second NFC championship in five years, while the Jets are seeking their first playoff appearance since 2010. New York has new uniforms, retro-styled to their 1980s look, and an old quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers was hurt in the first series of the first game of the Jets season in 2023 and will not attempt to come through for a team that has its entire future riding on him. But at age 40, there are legitimate concerns about Rodgers’ ability to stay healthy, let alone play at his former Hall of Fame level.

One QB that has plenty of future is 49ers signal caller Brock Purdy. Two years ago, Purdy was “Mr. Irrelevant” as the last player taken in the NFL Draft. Now, Purdy is the 49er starter and a proven winner who took San Francisco to an overtime lead in the Super Bowl before the defense failed to hold the Chiefs scoring the winning TD.

Week 3 offers an interesting Monday Night matchup when the Buffalo Bills host the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2022, Trevor Lawrence and first-year head coach Doug Pederson scored a playoff win and were pronounced the team of the future in the AFC South. But the Jaguars were reading their press clippings too much in 2023 and took a step back, allowing CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans to sneak through the back door to take the division title. Thus, Jacksonville is on a redemption tour for 2024.

The Buffalo Bills were said to have had their Super Bowl window close after their 2022 divisional-round playoff loss to the visiting Cincinnati Bengals. But Buffalo rallied to rip the AFC East Division title away from the New York Jets last year and win a playoff game. Thus, the season was a great reminder that QB Josh Allen and the Bills are not to be written off, at least until someone else proves they are better in the AFC East.

Week 14 brings a potential Super Bowl matchup on Monday Night Football when the Dallas Cowboys host the Cincinnati Bengals. Cincinnati could not recover from the loss of Joe Burrow to injury during the stretch drive toward the 2023 NFL Playoffs. But Burrow is back, and so is optimism for an improved Bengals team.
