Last week was quite a contrast in opening day performances for both the Auburn Tigers and the Georgia Bulldogs. On the Plains coach Gus Malzahn sported a Pat Dye retro look in a respectful tribute to the legendary Auburn coach who died last summer. COVID-19 caused the most difficult offseason in college football history. Especially for programs with new coaches such as the Missouri Tigers. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz did not get a spring practice that was desperately needed in order to implement his new system. On the other hand, the Alabama Crimson Tide have a powerful and established championship program. That being said head coach Nick Saban also needed a spring practice as the program transitions away from the unique offensive system designed for former quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who is now a Miami Dolphin. First and foremost, Mike Leach was the most successful Washington State head coach in a generation. But “The Pirate” saw what a mess the Pac 12 Conference has become. So too did he know that Wazzu had reached its maximum output as a program under his leadership. With that in mind Leach went to the best conference in the land. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s football program hasn’t experienced the type of success it currently has since the Lou Holtz days. From 1991-93, the team logged an impressive 31-5-1 record. Three major college football conferences have gone ahead with plans for a fall football season, including the Big 12. The Big 12 announced their football schedule for 2020 with teams playing a nine-game conference season with one nonconference matchup. The nonconference games are expected to be played on September 12th, while the conference schedule will begin on September 26.
