We don’t really get to know teams until they’ve played a few games. That makes Week 2 of the 2019 college football schedule an important one. And after a first full week of games that spanned five days, we’re back to a more traditional schedule with a bulk of the action taking place on Saturday. As always, it’s the big boys that attract most of the attention with heavyweight battles taking place in Texas and Clemson.... 

A busy Week 1 in college football with ranked teams playing on Sunday and Monday pushed the first top-25 poll back. There won’t be much change from the preseason rankings as all teams situated in the top-25 won except for Oregon, which lost a heartbreaker to Auburn in the weekend’s only contest between ranked teams. The Ducks trailed just once in that game and that was when Auburn scored the game-winning touchdown with nine seconds left in the fourth quarter.... 

On a national level this is the marquee matchup of opening weekend with a pair of ranked teams going head-to-head at a neutral site. The return of Justin Herbert has the Oregon Ducks thinking CFP this year while the Auburn Tigers are likely playing for Gus Malzahn’s job. OU is the higher ranked team in the preseason AP Poll at No. 11, but the Ducks are getting a field on the college football betting lines at offshore sportsbooks. The Huskies went on to win 10 games and fell in the Rose Bowl to Ohio State, while the Cougars won 11 after squeaking past Iowa State in the Alamo Bowl. U-Dub ( +250 ) is once again one of the listed favorites per the current college football betting lines to win the conference this upcoming season, while the Mad Scientist’s Cougars ( +1600 ) would need Anthony Gordon to pick up where Gardner Minshew left off to once again be in the mix. Last weekend was just a tease with No. 8 Florida squeaking by Miami in less than spectacular fashion. Thursday night kicks off the full Week 1 college football schedule with the 24 other teams ranked among the top 25 in action. Clemson begins its quest for a second straight national championship when the top-ranked Tigers host Georgia Tech on Thursday in an early-season ACC tilt. The 2019 college football season begins for real this week with nearly every team taking the field for the first time. There were a few games last weekend to whet our appetites and get us ready for what is sure to be a thrilling ride to the national championship game in January. Conference USA has seen a major drop in top tier programs since a number of them bolted for The American a few years back. That said, it still looks to be one of the more competitive conferences in the country! That’s made highly evident by the fact that linemakers installed eight teams with 12-1 or shorter odds to win the title and move on to the conference’s best bowl game; currently the Boca Raton Bowl. You can seriously make arguments for each and every one of them to win the conference, but... 

Even though the Ohio State Buckeyes have cashed in on the Big Ten title odds at online sportsbooks two straight seasons and Jim Harbaugh has never defeated the Scarlet and Grey since making Ann Arbor his home back in 2015, the Michigan Wolverines are currently installed slight favorites to win the B1G title game for the first time in program history. The Big 12 – otherwise known as the Oklahoma Sooners stomping ground – rarely rates out as one of the best conferences in the country. That has everything to do with the fact that the Oklahoma Sooners have dominated it in past seasons regardless of whether it was Bob Stoops or Lincoln Riley overlooking the program. My has the Atlantic Coast Conference fallen upon hard times! What was once a conference that boasted premiere national title contenders like Florida State, Virginia Tech and Louisville has now been resorted to a one-trick pony with the Clemson Tigers the one and only choice of the betting markets to win the whole enchilada. Makes sense considering Dabo Swinney has turned the Tigers into a perennial superpower having logged national championships in two of the last three seasons. They let it be known just how seriously they should be taken after Trevor Lawrence and company went out and thrashed the Alabama Crimson Tide in the title game of the College Football Playoff to bring the National Championship Trophy back to Death Valley. Unsurprisingly, the Tigers are the biggest favorites on the betting board at online sportsbooks to win the ACC for the fifth straight time and return to the CFP once again. They’re simply a different breed when it comes to talent, experience and coaching, so don’t go thinking crazy things about investing in anyone to win the ACC in 2019 other than the Tigers. ... 

Central Florida has been the class of The American since becoming a member a handful of seasons ago. You can’t go wrong backing them once again this upcoming season with Josh Heupel’s troops favored to win the conference at online sportsbooks a third straight season. The Syracuse Orange is coming off its best season in nearly two decades, as the team picked up 10 wins and captured the Camping World Bowl. Syracuse is nationally ranked heading into 2019 and expecting big things. The schedule is manageable but the current college football odds have a fair share of skepticism, as Syracuse must prove it is more than a one-year wonder. The Stanford Cardinal are ranked in the top-25 in the country by both the coaches and the Associated Press, but the oddsmakers aren’t as excited about this team in 2019. Stanford has a tough schedule and the current college football odds are projecting a season in which the Cardinal finish around .500. The Cardinal have a talented quarterback K.J. Costello but their vaunted running game fell apart a year ago and it needs to bounce back this year.... 

The South Carolina Gamecocks have a decent amount of talent coming back in 2019, but it might not matter. South Carolina has one of the toughest schedules in the country, and the current college football odds reflect how hard it will be for the team to pick up wins in 2019. The Gamecocks do have a veteran quarterback and some stability as coach Will Muschamp enters his fourth season, but this season is still going to be an uphill battle. ... 

The Oregon Ducks haven’t been in the College Football Playoff conversation for a half-decade but hope this is the year that changes. Oregon got a huge boost when star quarterback Justin Herbert passed on a chance to be a top-10 NFL draft pick to return to school. The Ducks offense should be explosive, and if the defense can step up, this group should be in contention for the Pac-12 title and maybe even in the national championship hunt. The program has fallen since the halcyon days of Chip Kelly... 

Three straight double-digit win seasons came to a crashing halt last season, as the Oklahoma State Cowboys finished the year just 6-6 and needed a bowl win to avoid a sub-.500 campaign. Oklahoma State hopes that is just a bump and that it will be right back to pushing for 10 wins. The current college football odds don’t make that seem too likely in 2019, as the team’s projected win total this year is conservative. Oklahoma State has a nice track record of late but there are enough question marks... 

The Penn State Nittany Lions have started to recruit at a higher level in recent years, which should mean some good times ahead. However, there are always peaks and valleys for programs, and there is concern 2019 will be a rebuilding campaign for Penn State. The Nittany Lions lost a lot of talent off last year’s squad and need to fill some high-profile holes, most importantly at quarterback following the departure of Trace McSorley. The Ohio State Buckeyes will enter the 2019 season with one of the most talented rosters in college football, like usual. However, a pair of changes at two key spots have allowed for the current college football odds to decline just a tad compared to normal. The Buckeyes must weather the losses of coach Urban Meyer and star quarterback Dwayne Haskins off of last year’s team. Ohio State is relying on new coach Ryan Day to make sure there isn’t a huge dropoff, while Justin Field will aim to replac... 

The Northwestern Wildcats are in the midst of a fantastic four-year stretch in which they have won at least nine games in three of those and are coming off a 10-win campaign. However, the team lost its heart and soul after last season with the departure of star quarterback Clayton Thorson. Northwestern has bucked the odds of late by remaining competitive against their more decorated Big Ten brethren, but the current college football odds are forecasting a step back in 2019.... 

The Oklahoma Sooners are on a ridiculous run at quarterback, as they have produced the past two No. 1 overall picks in the NFL draft. Baker Mayfield earned the top spot in 2018 and Kyler Murray was the pick in April. It’s not easy to replace that type of talent but Oklahoma is confident it can keep things rolling offensively with the transfer addition of former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts.
