It is the last tournament before next week’s Masters and somewhat surprisingly, a number of top players are in the field. In addition to Fowler and Rose, also prepping for the Masters in Houston are Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson. Last week was the match play event, so we didn’t have any true matchups to focus on. We’ll get back to normal with some matchup plays for this week in Houston. The last event before the Masters is this week’s Houston Open where a stronger than expected field is assembled. For those golfers who are not in the Top 64 in the latest World Golf Rankings and didn’t qualify for the WGC Match Play event, there is the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship tournament in the Dominican Republic. This will be the first year for this tournament on the PGA Tour, as it had previously been a Web.com Tour event. With no marquee players in the event, much of the attention will be on former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo who is playing this event. It is match play this week at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play event, with Rory McIlroy a slight favorite. It is almost unheard of for a player ranked No. 149 in the World Golf Rankings to be listed as a favorite to win a tournament, but this week that is the case, as Tiger Woods is favored to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational which starts on Thursday. Woods has played much better recently and was in contention last week at the Valspar Championship but was beaten by Paul Casey. Woods is getting a ton of attention in terms of golf odds, but many people are forgetting that this is not the same Tiger Woods of years ago. The Tiger Woods hype is in full force this week, as Tiger is listed as the favorite to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational. There is no question that Tiger played well last week at the Valspar Championship, but he still didn’t win. Things couldn’t have set up better for Tiger last week, as very few top players were in position to challenge, but Tiger just played average on Sunday and was passed up by Paul Casey. Woods is listed as the favorite this week at odds of +650, while Jason Day is the second choice at odds of +1100. Jordan Spieth is favored to win this week’s Valspar Championship in Florida, with Rory McIlory the second choice in the betting odds.
